  • Choosing the Best Tea

I LOOOVVEEE tea. I drink multiple cups a day and am very particular about what I'm drinking. If you ever spot me, chances are I'll have a stash of tea bags in my purse because I take them with me everywhere. How people will hand out mints, I'll hand out a tea bag if we're ever somewhere and a friend doesn't like the selection around them. I only carry winners. You're better than Lipton.

Here are my top winners right now. Each brings something different to the table depending on what you're feeling but all will leave you relaxed and satisfied.

    1. Kusmi Rose Green Tea. Peaceful. Relaxing. Perfection. This green tea is delicately fragrant with rose and is nothing short of a spa in a cup. No part is overbearing (when your tea can get gritty) and each sip from first to last is like one long meditation.

    2. Rishi Matcha Green. We hear all the time that green tea is one of the wonder teas. It's chock full of antioxidants and perhaps no greater source of them is in Matcha Green. This matcha is incredibly vibrant and enjoyable. I've been trying lately to have one of these a day. With benefits like increasing metabolism, source of EGCg (powerful antioxidant fights against free radicals), detoxing and mood enhancing you can see why.

    3. Choice Tea PeppermintI have been drinking Choice tea for years and it's by far one of my favorites out there. It's organic and high quality and you can find it in any Whole Foods you go to. Though I love many flavors the peppermint is one of my favorites (and certainly my favorite peppermint). If you ever have an upset stomach or feel a bit naseaous this is a great one to have. It also works as a nice tea after dinner since the peppermint cools down your stomach and makes food easier to digest.

    4. Rishi Blueberry Hibiscus. My husband got a tea bag of this at a restaurant a few months ago and we loved it so much we ordered 50 bags online! If you like fruity teas this is a winner but I like to use it when I'm really craving a snack but I know I should wait until dinner.:)

What are some of your favorite teas to drink?

  • The Best Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo can be a lifesaver. If you're running out the door and don't quite have time to wash your hair-dry shampoo to the rescue! We've all now been told a million times by our hairdressers never to wash our hair every day and there it is -- dry shampoo to the rescue!

However, when you have pin straight hair that tends to get incredibly greasy if you don't wash it every day, you look at dry shampoo and laugh. Most have only kept my hair fresh for about half a day and then by dinner I'm running my hands through greasy locks. I've written about it before but one of the best I've found is dry bar's detox - this one can take me to 2-3 days on the condition that my hair has been blown dry day 1 to get rid of excess moisture and give it volume.
I had tried products from Living Proof before and really loved them so when I heard about their Perfect Hair Day dry shampoo I had to give it a go! With PHD I can somehow get an extra day in when I don't blow dry (which I unheard of!). This stuff zaps grease, gives your hair a little life and some nice texture. It has a nice lemony sent and doesn't leave any of that white residue that products like klorane do. I'll still wash my hair probably more than I should but at least now my hair dresser can be a bit more proud of me some days:)
  • Be Plane Ready this Thanksgiving

Flying can be fun. Jetting off from one place to the next has a lot of excitement to it and though it's always fun to explore new restaurants and food wherever you're going, the one thing you don't want to explore is airline food. Things brought up into the skies tend to have a bit more sodium (and airplanes already make your body swell) and even though more and more airlines are carrying healthier snacks, sometimes they run out or if you're someone with dietary restrictions they won't fit all your needs. I'll generally make a sandwich the night before to take on the plane or if I make some thing for dinner the night before and it's travel friendly I'll pack that up. But let's face it, snacks are where it's at, so I'm always sure to have many on hand. Even if I don't eat them all on the plane they always come in handy whenever I reach my destination. Exploring makes a girl hungry!! Here are some of my favorite things to bring along:

A few more in flight tips:
    1. MOISTURIZE. Slather it on before you get on and keep a travel size bottle in your carry on to reapply at least once during your flight and again when you land. Your skin gets incredibly dehydrated while flying.
    2. Stay hydrated. Back to that dehydration... Drink plenty of water and try to refrain from the inflight coffee and tea (it's never good anyway). It helps to pick up a bottle or two of smart water in the airport before you fly since purified water keeps you less thirsty and more replenished. It may be expensive in the terminal but it's worth keeping your health (and beauty) on track.
    3. Reapply on the fly: when flying I try to keep my makeup to a minimum since it can cause excess drying. A girl of course wants to look presentable though so I'll often just put on a little shadow, my Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer (yay for more moisture!) and a little lip sheer. I then keep a travel size honest baby wipes in my carry on so when I land or when I get to the hotel (depending on how fast you have to get to and event), I can wipe of the minimal makeup, refresh my face, MOISTURIZE and put on my every day (or night) makeup.
What essential things do you do when you travel?

  • My Fav Healthier Beauty Buys Right Now

There is a lot of "better for you" beauty out there now which is a wonderful thing but it can be hard to decipher which products are worth using and what ones just don't hold up to their promise. Here are a few of my favorite products right now. Though they all may not be fully natural they all are free of many harmful ingredients and hold themselves up to higher standards then your everyday beauty products

    1. Sisely Paris Mascara: Thankfully Europe has higher standards for their beauty products so if you're looking for something effective yet less harmful it's wise to turn to products made there. I've been loving this Sisely Mascara that curls and lenthens your lashes and uses plant-based ingredients to achieve maximal results.

    2. Laura Mercier Silk Creme: Foundation. This is perhaps the trickiest healthy beauty buy. I've tried many a better-for-you brand but many just left me looking orangey or even worse - like I was wearing a ton of makeup. I'm always looking for something that's going to look camera ready but is also good for my skin and doesn't make me look like I have caked on makeup. I had recently fallen in love with Laura's tinted moisturizer so thought I'd give this photo-ready option a try. It feels so silky smooth on your skin, blends in perfectly and looks natural yet fierce. I go with the oil-free since my skin can get a bit oily plus it helps keep you dewey without being shiny. Laura's makeup is very allergy friendly so perfect for those with tempermental skin.

3,4 & 5. Beauty Counter Lip Sheer, Eye Duo and Concealer: Beauty Counter is committed to changing the Beauty standards in the U.S. and has been making a lot of headway. Any product you can buy from them is a step in the right direction. In fact, I also use the bronzer and blush duo as well. Though their Tint Skin didn't do it for me (see: orangey) I do know people who love it and swear by it for every day use. I have the lip sheer in several colors but my favorite for everyday is the TwigThe eye duo contains 2 complimentary shades (all over and crease) making this friendly for even a novice makeup wearer. I recommend picking up their brush set as well as it's one of the best I've ever used. The concealer is easy to use and blends in flawlessly.

6 & 7. Bobbi Brown eye liner & eye shadow: It's no secret that Bobbi Brown is one of the best in the business. Though Beauty Counter also makes great eyeliner, Bobbi's Long-Wear Eyeliner just has such a deep and rich color that lasts and looks so fierce you wonder why you'd use anything else (her gel-liner is also wonderful) I use her grey eye shadow in the outer corner of my eye, in combination with the Beauty Counter duo mentioned above, to create an every day smokey look. Having spent time with Bobbi, I know her commitment to finding the best ingredients for her products is high and that her goal is to always have the most nourishing yet effective line out there.

    8. Ilia Beauty Lip Gloss: Sasha Plavsic, creator of Ilia, was one of the first out there creating beauty products free of harmful ingredients. There are many things I love about her line (especially the mascara and lip crayons) but my absolute favorite is her lip gloss in Peek A Boo. The curved applicator is so soft and perfectly angled to sweep across your lips flawlessly. The Peek A Boo color is so neutral that it is the perfect comliment to almost any lip color and does wonders when paired with a smokey eye.

My list of products is always changing often playing with new and old favorites together. It was several months of play to find this combination so I did a lot of trial and error so you don't have to. I'll of course keep you updated with new products I find and love and please feel free to share with me some of the ones you can't live without in the comments below!

  • Homemade Energy Healing Body Scrub

I can be super sensitive to the energy around me and recently I was having one of those weeks where no matter what I did it just seemed like this energy that wasn't quite mine was latching on. I remembered some advice a healer had once given me about using salt as an effective way to slough off energy that was less than desirable. The lightbulb went off in my head and I rushed home to make my own special "energy healing" beauty scrub. The added bonus here is that it's also an exfoliant so your body is left feeling impossibly smooth and cared for. I had so much fun making this and believe it or not, felt a million times better after using it!! Here's what I created but feel free to play around with some ingredients that feel nice to you. The main ingredient of importance here is the salt which gives you the energy heal plus exfoliation:

    • 1/4 cup Himalayan sea salt
    • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil
    • 1tsp raw honey
    • 1 tpsn tocotrienols (vitamin E powder)

Once I mixed this all together I said a little prayer while having my hand over it asking for Divine Goddess energy to be infused into it. You can say any little blessing you like even just saying "I infuse this scrub with Divine Light & Love." Or you can skip over that and just go ahead and use it!

    Enjoy!

  • Maria Sharapova Takes On Skin Cancer With Supergoop! (Yahoo Beauty)

Each year millions of Americans are affected by skin cancer and it’s becoming more and more apparent that our days of sun bathing for that perfect tan may not be worth it. Supergoop co-owner and tennis star, Maria Sharapova, along with Supergoop founder Holly Thaggard have decided to do something about it with their new initiative, Project Black Dot. The project is a new advocacy and activism platform with the singular mission of ending the epidemic of skin cancer and changing the future of skin health in America.

It kicks off with Project Permission, and opportunity to educate kids on the importance of sunscreen by providing downloadable permission slips for parents to sign for their children to bring sunscreen to school. The goal is to get 100,000 sun safe students with signed permission slips. Sharapova gave Yahoo Beauty the scoop on her suncare routine and what we can expect from Project Black Dot.

Yahoo Beauty: When did this idea begin for you and Holly?

Maria Sharapova: The idea behind Project Black Dot has been something Holly and I spoke on before I actually invested in the brand. I’ve always been mindful of protecting my skin as I spend so much time outdoors. People today are less engaged in every day, year-round suncare habits, but it’s exactly this incidental, unprotected exposure to UV rays over the course of a lifetime that creates much of the damage that leads to skin cancer. I wanted to help spread the word about teaching and empowering kids.

In joining the Supergoop team I was shocked to learn that due to FDA regulations, most kids in the U.S. (47 out of 50 states) are restricted from bringing sunscreen to school without a permission slip because it’s classified as an over the counter drug. Our first project, Project Permission, is aiming to put power back into the hands of parents and schools by providing a simple, downloadable permission slip through the website ProjectBlackDot.org which parents can sign to allow their children to carry and apply sunscreen at school.

What is the most shocking fact you’ve learned about skin cancer from taking on this project?

My eyes have been opened to many shocking facts about skin cancer since joining the team, but I have to say most surprising to me is the sheer volume of people that will be affected by skin cancer. The yearly diagnosis of skin cancer significantly outweighs those of breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancer combined. One in five Americans will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in their life and yet it’s a disease that is not spoken about with the frequency or amplification that it demands. Here’s another one: Skin cancer is primarily preventable.

What would you like to see the result be on a grand scale in terms of sunscreen education?

It is so important that people understand that skin cancer does not discriminate based on age, sex, or skin tone and that any tan is a sign of sun damage. School policies in the United States must change to allow and encourage sunscreen on school campus in all states. I’ve always been diligent about using sunscreen throughout my childhood and I believe wholeheartedly that until kids embrace this daily habit we are not going to stem the epidemic of skin cancer. Too many children in the U.S. are not as fortunate as I was to learn early on that suncare isskincare.

How often do you reapply your sunscreen every day?

If I’m in direct sunlight, whether that’s on the court, at the beach, walking around, or having lunch outside, I’ll apply every 2 hours. That’s about how long sunscreen is effective. The product I use depends on where I am. Supergoop! Defense Refresh Mist ($12) is a really easy way to re-apply when you’re on the go but still want to protect your face after you’ve applied make-up at the start of the day. You can keep it in your bag and spray it on throughout the day.

Do you believe sunscreen should even be handed out in schools or at least readily accessible for children to wear?

Absolutely! Applying and reapplying sunscreen is something that was ingrained in me since I started playing tennis, I didn’t go outside without it. Why should it be any different for kids in the schoolyard or those participating in after school sports? Because we know that no sunscreen lasts all day and all schools have afternoon and after school activities, sun damage is inevitable without reapplication.

  • Caudalie Fragrances

"Find 'your' perfume before you turn thirty. Wear it for the next thirty years." - quote from How To Be Parisian Wherever You Are

I’m not one for perfumes, never have been, but there’s just something about Paris that just makes you want to find "your" signature scent (or at least to me!). I’ve recently fallen in love with Caudalie’s moisturizers since they’re not only extremely effective but also are full of nourishing ingredients and free of all the harmful ones like parabens and sodium laureth sulfate. So when I stumbled upon this Rose De Vigne fragrance by Caudalie on my vacation, without even trying it, I brought it right up to the register. Lucky for me, it turned out great. I actually now look forward to putting a fragrance on in the morning. There is something very sultry and romantic about the scent and knowing that I’m not spritzing harmful ingredients into the air makes me enjoy it all the more. Caudalie has a whole lineup of fragrances so you can choose what speaks most to you. C’est magnifique!

  • Meet Olive & June Founder Sarah Gibson Tuttle

Meet Olive & June Founder Sarah Gibson Tuttle
Olive & June, the LA based nail salon, is not only a destination for the stars, but it’s also for women (and men) who care about beauty done right. Their dedication to proper practices, healthy products, and not only customer, but staff happiness is unlike any other nail salon you’ll visit. The salon is delightfully girly with an inviting hint of warmth, and a selection of 5-free polishes (that means they are free from these five toxic ingredients: formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, formaldehyde resin and camphor) that will make you wonder why you ever bothered with the other stuff. We caught up with the owner and vision behind the chic salon, Sarah Gibson Tuttle, on what it took to get where she is, baby prep (she just gave birth to a new baby girl a few weeks ago), and what the future of nail beauty holds. (Read the full interview on Yahoo Beauty)
  • I AM Fragrance

I AM Fragrance creator, Danica Siegel, created her line to help women recognize all they had to offer the world. She noticed that most of the beauty products she saw were telling women to strive to be like someone else. Each I AM Fragrance is instead dedicated to awakening those parts of you that you want to experience more of. Her suggested use is to apply your perfume while saying the mantra on the bottle aloud. (i.e. I AM Love). "I AM" is the most powerful statement we can say about ourselves, it is our connection to the Divine, so we want to be sure we're staying conscious of what we allow to follow those words. I AM Fragrance is a nice everyday reminder of that.

Danica also doesn't use any of those icky chemicals you'll find in many department store brands. Instead she uses organic oils and flower essences of the highest quality to help evoke whatever fabulous parts of you you'd like to shine forth a bit more. All sizes are TSA approved and the bottles are beautifully designed so you'll want to bring them everywhere.

  • Earth Tu Face

This California based company intrigued me at first glance because of their adorable reusable packaging. But when I looked further, I realized the creators Sarah Buscho & Marina Storm were two herbalists who's philosophy was you should never put anything on your face that you wouldn't put in your mouth. Their entire line of products are made up of 100% plant-based, non GMO food based ingredients.

I decided to give it a whirl and ordered their Skin Stick. I had burned my arm quite badly while making fried chicken (as you do) a few months ago and though I had found a product that helped it heal, the scars were at a total standstill and didn't seem to have any intention of leaving anytime soon. Earth Tu Face's Skin Stick claimed to help with scarring so I decided to give it a try. After 2 weeks of the easiest application (it's built like a push pop!) my scars have almost disappeared.

There are a lot of "natural" skincare products out there, it can be hard to know what works and what doesn't. It's nice to see one with such immediate results. Now I can't wait to try the rest of the line!

  • The Springs

If you live in Los Angeles or have been here to visit, you know that it can take a lot to make you get in your car to drive to another part of town. Some things are worth the trek though and for this Westside girl, The Springs in Downtown LA is one of them. The Springs is a one stop shop for renewing, relaxing, and losing those few extra pounds. It’s a well-being playground housed in a giant warehouse that looks like it just stepped out of your last issue of Dwell magazine. Here’s what they have to offer: Keep reading

  • Hit The Snooze Button. How To Look Like You Have Your S%&* Together In Less Than A Minute.

Sometimes we just want to sleep in. Either we had a rough night out, a busy week or are just plain tired for no needed reason! You can feel a bit more confident hitting the snooze button with these 4 easy steps to get your makeup hair looking great in less than a minute.

Step 1 - The Face: We want fresh looking, seemingly well-rested skin. My go-to is this Tint Skin Complexion Coverage from Beauty Counter. You can rub it in easily with your fingers and it's free of all the harmful chemicals you find in most makeup.*

Step 2 - The Eyes: Our eyes must pop otherwise what's the point of wearing makeup at all? The mascara from Ilia Beauty is the only mascara I'll use without eyeliner. The perfectly curved wand not only curls your lashes it also seperates and lengthens them without clumping. As an added bonus it's naturally preserved and free of phenoxyethanol.

Step 3 - The Lips: Making your lips look plump & nourished will help make you look more vibrant and awake. Very similar to Chanel's chubby sticks but far better for your health are Ilia's lip crayons. They also make your lips feel great. The color featured here is "Call Me".

Step 4 - The Hair: As someone with pin-straight hair, not washing it every day is a challenge. I've tried many a dry shampoo but most will only last me a few hours. The only one that's kept the grease at bay (so far up to 3 days!!) is DryBar's Detox. It also smells great so get ready to have people compliment you all day. You can't fully see it in the photo above but before I sprayed it in my hair my bangs looked like wet spaghetti! (not the cutest look:))

Now you have some extra time to grab that much needed latte:)

*Be sure to wear sunscreen under your makeup. Just because you're sleepy doesn't mean the sun won't be out to greet you!:)

  • Whatever Lola Wants

I've officially retired any nail polish that isn't 5-free or fully organic. With so many great colors and brands out there finding beautiful & healthy polish is easier than ever. My new favorite is this white-light pink shimmering 5-free polish from Deborah Lippmann, co-created with Kelly Ripa, called "Whatever Lola Wants" after her daughter Lola. It's light enough for everyday use with enough hint of color that your nails still pop.

Get it here: Whatever Lola Wants

  • Make Your Eyes Pop with Ilia Mascara

Seeing (no pun intended) it’s many a gal’s favorite makeup accessory, you want to be sure your mascara is treating you right. Ilia Beauty’s formula is naturally preserved & phenoxyethanol free and has a perfectly curled brush that not only curls your lashes but separates them for you while adding length. Though their black shade, Nighfall, is wonderful, don’t be afraid to try something different and go with the dark brown “Shadow Of A Doubt”. Now go find someone to bat those lashes at.;)

  • Drum Roll Please...The One Natural Deodorant That Works!!!!

I really want the healthy deoderants to work. I really, really do. So much so that I've tried far more than the people around me probably cared for me too, which is why today I'm VERY excited. Ladies & gents, it exists! The one natural deoderant that will put all other deoderants to shame...

This made it through Soul Cycle leaving me still smelling clean and fresh. Not even my husband's Dove for Men deoderant could get me through that. It's also lasted an easy 24 hours without wearing off. As an added bonus it smells great (plus rose has been linked to attraction) and is an easy portable size to travel with or just to stash in your bag for everyday use!

  • Glow From The Inside Out

Juice Bars are popping up everywhere these days but not only can they be pricey, you have no real assurance on how thoroughly they wash their fruits & vegetables which can leave you exposed to pesticides, e.coli and mold. Yuck, right? Sure you can make your own green juice at home but, for anyone who’s ever cleaned a juicer, you know purchasing it is far simpler. Thankfully there is a solution! Greens First is a delicious green juice powder with all the nutrients and then some that you’d get from a traditional green juice. Just do a scoop with 8 oz of water every morning. Each serving has over 15 servings of fruits & vegetables and helps alkalize your body leading to healthier skin and more energy. To make it even better, each serving will only cost you around $1 plus it tastes great! I do one every morning when I wake up then give it at least 15 min before I eat breakfast so my body has a chance to absorb all the nutrients. xo

  • The Fancy Hippie's Mood Boosting, Anxiety Taming, Pick-Me-Up Smoothie

I don't know about you, but I often feel like the lady in that 5-hour energy commercial. Once 2pm, 3pm rolls around I get hit with the tired stick. This smoothie is a quick and easy way to give your body some pretty cool nutrients with a little caffeine boost to get you through the rest of your day.

You'll notice that a lot of ingredients come from Moon Pantry. After hearing people rave about this place I finally gave it a go and have been LOVING their products. The nice thing is, they come in a big size for the amount of servings you actually take from the jar. So while the pricing could seem semi-steep at first ($14-$35 a jar) these will last you a while.

    Ingredients

    • one cup almond milk (or non-dairy milk of your choice)
    • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
    • handful of whole organic coffee beans (I like to use Grounds & Hounds)
    • 1 banana
    • 1 tsp almond butter
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1 tbsp Tocotrienols (great for inflammation taming and immunity boosting. Beauty food.)
    • 1 tsp Lucuma (reverses effects of aging)
    • 1/2 tsp Ashwagandha (alleviates depression and improves sleep)
    • 1/2 tsp Pearl (Beautifying cell builder)
    • 3 ice cubes
    • sprinkle of sea salt

Blend till all is combined. Enjoy and rejuvinate!

  • Get The Glow

I first learned about this on Food Babe but it was too good not to share here. For those of you similar to me who just want to get in the shower, get out & get going this will become your new favorite process. Even if you are one who prefers taking long luxurious showers till your fingers wrinkle up & your water bill makes you cringe, you'll dig this. The whole thing will take you less than a minute & be well worth the 60 seconds.

Step 1: Dry Brush your whole body by rubbing the brush in circular motions from head to toe. Why dry brush? Not only does it make your skin softer, it also naturally reduces cellulite & improves your lymphatic system. Sold!

Step 2: Slather your whole body (face included) with Aura Cacia's Sesame Oil. This stuff smells incredible & will leave your body feeling impossibly smooth. Since it's an oil it goes on super quick so you can get it on in less than 30 sec.

Step 3: Shower. Once you're done showering you'll be able to noticabley tell a difference in your skin's softness.

I do this process every other day and now I even look forward to the days I do.* It's your own 60 second spa treatment with benefits you'll enjoy for years to come!

Get the brush: Tampico Skin Brush By Yerba Prima

Get the oil: Aura Cacia's Sesame Oil

*It's also super easy to travel with. The brush head on the one I list here is removable so you can pack it along with a travel container of your oil and never miss a day! (once you get going you won't want to miss one!)

  • Beauty Counter - Makeup That Treats You Right

"The United States has not passed a federal law to regulate the ingredients used in personal care products since 1938."

Pretty horrifying, right? Women love to look beautiful & one of the ways we do that is through makeup. But what if we're paying far too high a price to do so? The EU has banned over 1,300 ingredients allowed in personal care products. The United States has banned 11. ELEVEN!!! Makes you stop and think, huh?

Beauty Counter is a new makeup line who is changing the game. Not only do they refuse to use the 1,300 EU banned ingredients & the United States' measly 11 but also over 200 other ingredients, they've found through research, that can be potentially harmful to our health.

Now, we've all seen the organic makeup lines at Whole Foods or other health stores but from what we've heard or tried they never really work all too well. That's where Beauty Counter is changing it all. Their products are actually good. I take that back, they're truly GREAT. The colors are beautiful, the coverage stunning & it leaves your skin looking and feeling healthy - because finally it has a chance to be.
